Mindhunter season 3 2022: Cast, Episodes, Serial killers, And Everything

“We are hopeful that we will get to do the whole five seasons…”

***Mindhunter spoilers follow***

When Mindhunter’s second season premiered on Netflix in August 2019, viewers wasted no time in tearing through all nine episodes of the David Fincher-produced series at breakneck pace before looking ahead to the show’s future.

When Netflix promised that a special David Fincher announcement would take place on October 13, it looked like a third season might finally be on the way.

Fans expected to hear that a third season of Mindhunter was in the works, but their hopes were quickly dashed when it was revealed that Fincher’s new project was a docuseries called Voir, which will premiere at the American Film Institute’s AFI Fest on November 13 before being released on Netflix at a later date.

Fans of Mindhunter shouldn’t give up hope for a third season just yet.

There are still plenty of real-life serial killers for FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) to investigate with the help of psychologist Wendy Carr, as the series continues (Anna Torv).

Plus, because Fincher originally wanted to film five seasons of Mindhunter, there’s a potential he’ll return to it after completing other projects like Voir.

Since filming season two of Mindhunter in 2018, Fincher has been busy with a number of projects. He directed the Netflix film Mank, which won two Academy Awards in April 2021 (for Cinematography and Production Design), produced the second season of the animated series Love, Death, and Robots, and is planning to direct an adaptation of the graphic novel The Killer, starring Michael Fassbender, in addition to producing Voir this year.

It’s understandable, therefore, that Netflix announced on January 15, 2020 that Mindhunter season 3 is on indefinite hold (not officially cancelled — merely that the cast and crew have been freed from their contracts), in part due to David Fincher’s hectic schedule.

“He may return to Mindhunter in the future,” a representative stated at the time, “but he didn’t feel it was fair to the performers to keep them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”

However, actor Holt McCallany recently told Pop Culture that he hopes for not only a third season, but two more as well.

“We’re hoping to do all five seasons,” he said, “since the audience seems to have really responded to the show, and people truly like the show.”

We all know Netflix isn’t scared to cancel great shows, but the cancellation of Mindhunter may be the final straw for many of the service’s users.

“We started getting scripts for the second season, and I ended up reading them and determining that none of them appealed to me. As a result, we tossed it and began again. It is, however, a 90-hour work week. Everything in your life is absorbed by it. I was fatigued when I finished, and I told myself, ‘I don’t know whether I have it in me right now to finish season three… Mindhunter was a lot for me.'”

He continued by saying, “[It’s] most likely completed. Listen, it was a costly show for the audience that it attracted. I honestly don’t think we’ll be able to do it for less than what I spent on season two. And you have to be honest about the fact that dollars must equal eyeballs on some level.”

Small Screen recently reported that it hadn’t been ruled out, citing a source as saying, “All I can really tell you regarding Mindhunter is that negotiations between Netflix and Fincher are ongoing.” They’re debating whether or not to renew the show for a third season.

“Though it’s still early in the process, Fincher appears to be more enthusiastic about the project.”

Let’s hope Fincher doesn’t wait too long to reassemble his crack crew, or else they’ll be too preoccupied with other projects to return to the serial killer series for another season.

While star McCallany has been focusing on movies since the last season of Mindhunter (he’ll next be seen in Guillermo Del Toro’s thriller Nightmare Alley), Anna Torv is committed to filming the HBO series The Last Of Us until next summer, and Jonathan Groff will be busy at the end of the year promoting his mysterious role in The Matrix Resurrections as well as preparing to reunite with his Frozen voice co-star Kristen Bell for the animated

Hopefully, both the cast and the director will find time to give the fans what they want and return to Mindhunter in the near future.

In the meantime, here’s everything you need to know about the third season of Mindhunter.

Mindhunter season 3 release date: When will it premiere?

Season one premiered in October 2017, but we had to wait until August 2019 for the second instalment, which was excruciating.

Mindhunter necessitates a great deal of research and detail, so even if it returns, we’ll have to wait a long time.

Mindhunter season 3 cast: Who’s in it?

We may expect to see Ford (Groff) and Tench (Holt McCallany) back on our screens if the show is renewed.

Groff told TV Insider, “We’re kind of like the strange pair.” I believe. Holt and I had a lot of fun together playing with the odd couple dynamic because he and I are so different in so many ways, both as characters and as people, and we had a lot of fun with that relationship.”

Bill’s wife Nancy (Stacey Roca), FBI Chief Ted Gunn (Michael Cerveris), Bill and Nancy’s adopted son Brian (Zachary Scott Ross), and the ‘BTK killer’ Dennis Rader are all anticipated to attend with them (Sonny Valicenti).

There’s also a chance we’ll see Ed Kemper (Cameron Britton) again, along with a slew of other serial killers Holden and Bill haven’t yet questioned.

In season one, Special Agent Jim Barney (Albert Jones) made a brief appearance when he interviewed for a job opening in the FBI’s Behavioural Science Unit, but was beaten to it by Gregg.

He did, however, play a significant role in season two’s Atlanta Child Murders investigation. It’s unclear whether we’ll see him again.

Holden’s past love interest Debbie Mitford (Hannah Gross), who didn’t appear in season two at all, and Lauren Glazier, who played Kay Manz, the bartender Wendy had a brief connection with, seem unlikely to return.

Mindhunter season 3 episodes: How many will there be?

Season one had 10 episodes, whereas season two had one less.

We’d expect something in the same ballpark if there’s a third.

Mindhunter season 3 serial killers: Who will feature?

Several serial murderers have appeared in the first two seasons, each with their own storey, compulsions, and method of operation.

We’ve seen the likes of Jerome ‘Jerry’ Brudos, Montie Rissell, Richard Speck, and David Berkowitz alongside Ed Kemper and Dennis Rader (Son of Sam).

McCallany was supposed to meet with Berkowitz for research purposes, but the opportunity was taken away from him at the last minute.

He told The Independent, “That was really frustrating to me.” “I wanted to sit in front of him and have the sensation of looking into his eyes to attempt to figure out whether he was the same man who murdered those people in the 1970s.” My gut feeling is that it isn’t.

“There isn’t a lot of support for rehabilitation in the law enforcement world, so it’s about putting myself in the circumstance and getting a thorough knowledge of who these guys were.”

If season three is given the green light, Rader will undoubtedly return, and there’s a chance Kemper will as well. But what about the show’s newest cast members?

Viewers have speculated on which serial killers might appear, with Ted Bundy’s name being mentioned.

Season two took place between 1980 and 1981, when Bundy was imprisoned. He was imprisoned for nine years before being executed by electric chair in 1989 at the State Prison in Raiford, Florida, after admitting to 30 killings, though it is suspected that he committed more.

However, the period for season three will determine which subjects are chosen.

Of course, the greatest place to look for true insight into where the programme might be headed is John Douglas, the criminal profiler who is the inspiration for Holden Ford. There are still a few loose ends to tie up.

“Not only did I have the Atlanta child killings by 1981,” Douglas told Vulture, “but I also had the Tylenol murders.” “In Chicago, we had the Unabomber case. Then there were the cases of Buffalo’s.22-caliber killer and others.”

The killers Douglas describes, whether he realises it or not, would combine to produce a rather fulfilling dramatic arc for season three, whether he realises it or not.

The Unabomber wasn’t apprehended until 1996, a year after Douglas left from the FBI, thus he’d be fascinating as a side storey but not as the major narrative. He is, nevertheless, the most ‘renowned’ (infamous?) of the probable candidates.

The Tylenol murders were never solved, but they did inspire a wave of copycat killers whose cases were investigated and solved, and the idea of a killer poisoning his victims (and inspiring such a wave of other killers) makes it a unique case for the Mindhunter gang to investigate (as opposed to all the sexually motivated crimes they’ve covered so far). Once again, a fantastic subplot.

The major arc, on the other hand, might belong to the.22-caliber killer Douglas specifies. The 10-victim serial killer was motivated by racial hatred, allowing the show to delve further into broader social issues. Significantly, the killer – Joseph Christopher – was apprehended in 1981, providing a fitting conclusion to the season.

It should be mentioned that not every detail about the serial killers in the series is based on true facts.

Douglas discussed the iconic ‘grab’ incident between Ed Kemper and Holden Ford exclusively with Digital Spy (the character actually inspired by Douglas).

He acknowledged, “Kemper would never have done that.”

Holden’s bodily reaction to the stress of his profession, on the other hand, has some reality to it.

Ford is strapped to a hospital bed in Mindhunter season 2, having endured severe panic attacks (brought on by his close encounter with Kemper).

“You saw how that affected Holden Ford, the character who portrays me, in the closing episode of the first season, and that’s real,” Douglas remarked. “Some of the backstory is different… [But] the anxiety that Holden Ford is experiencing now is the same anxiety that I am experiencing.” Because, by the time I’m 38, I’ll have almost died on a case, the Green River murder case, when I collapse in my hotel room with viral encephalitis.

“I was paralysed and had to go through five months of therapy after being in a coma for a week.”

He also revealed that Mindhunter‘s portrayal of “the Bureau’s process” was accurate, as was the fact that the FBI was initially opposed to the project. It’s also true that the unit was installed in the basement at first.

Mindhunter season 3 plot: What will happen?

 mindhunter-season-2

Aside from the serial killers that play a major role in each season, Mindhunter’s principal ensemble has its own problems, which will be explored in future episodes.

Bill Tench’s son Brian and the child murder he witnessed midway through season two are one twist that has particularly dramatic repercussions for season three.

While he did not directly assist in the boy’s death, he kept the crime a secret, refusing to tell his parents or even seek help when the boy was murdered. As if that weren’t enough, Brian also suggested that the boy’s lifeless body be hanged on a cross, apparently in an attempt to resurrect him.

The impact of this tragedy isn’t easily handled, just as it isn’t in real life, and given how Brian retreated more into himself in the weeks that followed, it’s evident that these events will continue to affect Bill and the Tench family in season three as well.

When asked about Bill’s poor relationship with his wife Nancy and son Brian, McCallany told The Wrap: “Those sequences were inspired by my own father. He was a product of his time. In some ways, [he] was an absent parent in the same manner that Bill is absent.”

When the FBI agent returns home at the end of season two, he discovers that the two of them have gone missing.

Michael McAloney, the Tony Award-winning producer behind the 1970 Broadway production of Borstal Boy, was his father. Michael’s life, according to the Mindhunter star, was similar to Bill’s in that he was constantly tugged in two directions.

“He worked with Tony for many years. My father used to hang out in Irish bars with individuals like [Tench] and IRA members. It was something that my mum didn’t comprehend or appreciate “he stated

“She gradually walked away from him without saying anything.”

McCallany put what he imagined would have been his father’s feelings into his acting during the empty house scene, remarking that “you’re not even given the courtesy of a goodbye.”
