Season 2 of Demon Slayer is currently working its way through the Mugen Train Arc, with the anime repeating storey aspects from its recent feature film. That means fans will get to spend more time with Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira, as well as an exclusive episode devoted entirely to the character. And Hashira the Flame is a major character in the second season of the show. But who is Rengoku, and why is he significant in Tanjiro’s Demon Slayer story?
Tanjiro joins Rengoku on a mission in ‘Demon Slayer’ Season 2
Rengoku has previously been introduced to those who have seen Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. Those expecting the anime to provide this arc only know him from Tanjiro’s interaction with the Hashira at the end of Demon Slayer Season 1 will be disappointed. And that little presence does not provide a complete picture of the character.
In season 2, viewers gain a deeper knowledge of the Flame Hashira when Tanjiro and his friends accompany Rengoku on a mission. That’s especially true owing to the season premiere, which explains how Rengoku came to be investigating the Mugen Train disappearances in the first place.
Rengoku is already well-known to those who have seen Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. Those counting on the anime to provide this arc only know him through Tanjiro’s encounter with the Hashira at the end of Demon Slayer Season 1 will be disappointed. And that brief appearance doesn’t even come close to portraying the character in its entirety.
Season 2 gives viewers a deeper knowledge of the Flame Hashira as Tanjiro and his friends accompany Rengoku on a mission. That’s especially true after the season premiere, which reveals how Rengoku came to be investigating the Mugen Train disappearances in the first place.
What is Rengoku’s power?
Rengoku may be friendly and optimistic, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a formidable foe. It takes a lot of strength to become one of the finest Demon Slayers. And the Flame Hashira has plenty of it.
Rengoku’s specialty is dealing with fire, as his name suggests. He is a superb swordsman who performs nine different styles of Fire Breathing. They all launched fiery attacks at his foes, cutting and burning them at the same time.
Rengoku learnt Flame Breathing from his father, who also happens to be the previous Flame Hashira. His father is one of the few Hashira who chose to retire rather than die on the job. Rengoku is concerned about his bitter streak, which is exacerbated by booze. He also has a younger brother, Senjuro Rengoku, whom he adores and guards fiercely.
His protective nature isn’t limited to his family. Rengoku’s life objective is to protect those in need, and he’ll have the opportunity to do so during Demon Slayer Season 2. In fact, before the Mugen Train Arc is over, he’ll make quite an impression on Tanjiro and his pals.

Rengoku will be able to demonstrate his Flame Breathing and protective nature in Demon Slayer Season 2 as he fights off the demon responsible for the Mugen Train’s disappearances. Those who have watched the movie — or read the Demon Slayer manga — know that Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu will assist him. Of course, he’ll also be tasked with defending the Monster Slayer Corps’ younger members from the demon Akaza.
Although Tanjiro will start on a new quest with another Hashira in the Entertainment District Arc, Rengoku will leave an indelible impression on the anime’s main character and his allies. Before his time in the spotlight is over, he’ll have a significant showdown — but that’s something first-time viewers should see without spoilers.
Demon Slayer Season 2 is currently streaming on Netflix, Crunchyroll and Funimation.
