Arrow Video and Academy Blu Ray releases March 2018

Arrow Video & Academy logos

Another month, another large collection of Arrow Blu Ray releases awaiting the cult film fan’s hard-earned cash. A large number of these have already done the Arrow rounds in different versions but hey… it’s nice to give folk a second opportunity.

On 5th March 2018 we get a Standard Edition rerelease of Brian De Palma’s entertainingly bonkers split-personality psychological thriller Raising Cain. The following week (12th March 2018) Arrow gives us the UK Blu Ray debut of the 1987 adaptation of VC Andrews’ novel Flowers in the Attic. It’s a horror melodrama of child abuse featuring Steve Martin’s erstwhile wife Victoria Tennant, Louise Fletcher (who played Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) and Kristy Swanson (who later appeared in the original 1992 movie incarnation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

On the same date three early George Romero movies (which were originally released together in an Arrow box set) will be rereleased as individual Blu Rays. There's Always Vanilla (1971) was the film the director made following Night of the Living Dead and remains one of his rare non-horror efforts. However, horror buffs needn’t feel left out in the cold as Season of the Witch (1972) and The Crazies (1973) also get rereleased at the same time. The latter, in particular, is considered to be an underrated entry in his CV and something of a spiritual precursor to his masterpiece Dawn of the Dead.

It’s time to head to the Wild West of Italy for a double-bill of spaghetti westerns on the 19th March 2018 for A Pistol for Ringo & The Return of Ringo: Two Films by Duccio Tessari. Both films (originally released in 1965) feature genre star Giuliano Gemma (from the excellent Day of Anger which was also released on an Arrow Blu Ray some time ago) as the eponymous gunslinger.

On 26th March 2018 Arrow are rereleasing Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988), albeit this time on a brand new 4K restoration. It’s a very silly, but equally entertaining, horror-comedy produced, written and directed by the notorious practical FX artists The Chiodo Brothers. If you’ve ever wanted to see deaths by cream pies, cotton candy and hand puppets, this is the film for you.

Over on the Arrow Academy Classic/World Cinema side of things we another western, this time of the classic Hollywood style, released on Blu Ray on 5th March 2018. Ramrod (1947) features Veronica Lake and Joel McCrea.

On the 19th March 2018 the unjustly-forgotten Robert Altman film Images (1972) gets its turn for the Arrow treatment. It’s a psychological horror-drama starring Susannah York and taking material from a children’s book which the actress was writing at the time.

The final Arrow Academy release in March comes on the 26th in the form of Sacha Guitry Four Films 1936-1938. The four films in this box set are The New Testament (Le Nouveau testament), My Father Was Right (Mon père avait raison), Let’s Make a Dream… (Faisons un rêve...) and Let’s Go Up the Champs-Élysées (Remontons les Champs-Élysées).
