ON DVD & BLU-RAY

November (2017) dir: Rainer Sarnet Blu Ray & DVD (Eureka!)

Estonian director Rainer Sarnet's dark fairytale-like fantasy possesses stunning monochrome visuals, dreamlike symbolism and a haunting ambient soundtrack but lacks a coherent narrative. You'll be left feeling either entranced or befuddled. Starring Rea Lest, Jörgen Liik and Arvo Kukumägi.

Lilith (1964) starring Warren Beatty Blu Ray (Indicator)

Warren Beatty plays a psychologically damaged war veteran who gets involved with the sensual but schizophrenic title character (played by Jean Seberg), resulting in an inevitable tragedy. It's a beautifully metaphorical film but also overwhelmingly depressing.

The Triple Echo (1972) dir: Michael Apted Blu Ray (Indicator)

This unconventional WWII drama features both Glenda Jackson and Oliver Reed falling for a cross-dressing Brian Deacon. An interesting if imperfect big screen debut for director Apted gets by mainly on the strengths of its three central performances.

Human Desire (1954) dir: Fritz Lang Blu Ray & DVD (Eureka!)

This Americanised adaptation of Jean Renoir's version of Émile Zola’s novel La Bête humaine is one of Lang's more underrated film noirs. The director's cinematic flair and the ambiguities in the central characterisations make for a gripping watch.

A visually average but personality-rich young woman finds love in this breezy and hilarious 1960s British New Wave comedy-drama. Some dated attitudes don't spoil the fun here. Also starring Alan Bates, James Mason and Charlotte Rampling.
