Frank Sidebottom The Home of the Retrospective

ON DVD & BLU-RAY

Dark River (2017) Blu Ray & DVD (Arrow Academy)

Clio Barnard's loose adaptation of Rose Tremain's novel Trespass, transplanted to the Yorkshire Dales, features a gorily authentic depiction of the struggles of tenancy farming and some real depths hinted at in Ruth Wilson and Mark Stanley's performances. In the end, however, it's little more than artistically-mounted gloom porn.

Xtro (1982) Blu Ray: Limited Edition Box Set (Second Sight)

Harry Bromley Davenport's cult sci-fi horror amounts to a disjointed collection of weird and gruesome scenes. For all that, it is good fun. If you've ever wanted to see a woman gruesomely give birth to a fully-grown man and an Action Man figure come to life to murder a neighbour, then this is for you.

Worth a dip in the ocean for the extras, even if the film itself has its issues.
