Frank Sidebottom The Home of the Retrospective

Parents (1989) Blu Ray (Vestron Video/Lionsgate)

Bob Balaban's black horror comedy about cannibalism within the Suburban American Dream is a subversive, surreal gem. Randy Quaid gives the finest, creepiest performance of his career. Also starring Mary Beth Hurt, Sandy Dennis and Bryan Madorsky.

Tideland (2005) dir: Terry Gilliam Blu Ray (Arrow)

This is arguably the hardest Terry Gilliam film to rate objectively. It combines his patented dreamlike, wide-angle cinematic beauty with some incredibly queasy subject matter. Some people love it but it's hard to know who exactly you could recommend it to.

Allure (2017) starring Evan Rachel Wood DVD (Eureka!)

This controversial look at the complex issues surrounding an abusive/controlling relationship between a grown woman and an adolescent girl will upset many viewers. However, it is well-acted, frank and non-exploitative - if somewhat rough around the edges.

The Grifters (1990) dir: Stephen Frears Blu Ray & DVD (101 Films)

This neo-noir, adapted from Jim Thompson's novel, is a stylishly tragic portrayal of the human beings behind its sundry scams and hardboiled dialogue. It's an overlooked gem, featuring outstanding performances by John Cusack, Anjelica Huston and Annette Bening.

The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds (1972) Blu Ray (Indicator)

Paul Newman directed his wife Joanne Woodward and daughter Nell Potts in this sad but surprisingly funny and rewarding drama examining both the inherent psychological abuse within a broken family and the beacon of hope brought by education.
