Frank Sidebottom The Home of the Retrospective

Dark River (2017) Blu Ray & DVD (Arrow Academy)

Clio Barnard's loose adaptation of Rose Tremain's novel Trespass, transplanted to the Yorkshire Dales, features a gorily authentic depiction of the struggles of tenancy farming and some real depths hinted at in Ruth Wilson and Mark Stanley's performances. In the end, however, it's little more than artistically-mounted gloom porn.

Flowers in the Attic (1987) starring Louise Fletcher Blu Ray (Arrow)

Jeffrey Bloom's toned-down adaptation of V.C. Andrews' popular novel about incest and child abuse manages some gothic atmosphere but suffers from poor dialogue and implausibilities.

Hammer Volume Two: Criminal Intent (1958-1961) Blu Ray (Indicator)

This compilation of the cult British studio's crime dramas proves that they ably turned their hands to genres other than the horror films which made them famous. The Snorkel, Never Take Sweets From a Stranger, Cash on Demand and The Full Treatment are the four offerings in this set.
