Frank Sidebottom The Home of the Retrospective

ON DVD & BLU-RAY

Iron Monkey (1993) dir: Yuen Woo-Ping Blu Ray (Eureka!)

Yu Rong-Kwong plays the titular Robin Hood-style hero in this classic wuxia which revolves around the childhood of Chinese martial artist Wong Fei-Hong. The plentiful action is exhilaratingly wild yet gracefully choreographed, while the occasional moments of character are crafted with a genuine poignancy.

The Defiant Ones (1958) dir: Stanley Kramer Blu Ray & DVD (Eureka!)

Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis play a pair of escaped prisoners chained together in this grittily realistic but entertaining look at racism. The two leads perform most of their own stunts, creating a sense of immersion in the film's natural dangers.

Jake Speed (1986) starring Wayne Crawford Blu Ray (Arrow)

This semi-parodic homage to archetypal paperback heroes and Indiana Jones-style adventures has some neat touches but suffers from weak execution and a lack of likeable characters. John Hurt has fun as the villain but, for the most part, Jake Plod would have been a more apt title.

Space Truckers (1996) Blu Ray (Second Sight)

Stuart Gordon's sci-fi action comedy sports a good deal of imagination and a fine Dennis Hopper performance but is let down by its corny humour and the uneven quality of its special effects.

Breakheart Pass (1975) Blu Ray & DVD (Eureka!)

This train-set civil war era Western, featuring Charles Bronson at his 1970s career peak, starts slowly but soon livens up with plentiful twists and some spectacular action.

Sleeping Dogs (1977) starring Sam Neill Blu Ray (Arrow Academy)

This seminal dystopian sci-fi action thriller from New Zealand is low-budget and technically rough around the edges. However, it succeeds admirably in mixing entertainment with a chilling cautionary tale. It also stars Nevan Rowe, Ian Mune and Warren Oates.

Breathless (1983) starring Richard Gere Blu Ray (Second Sight)

Jim McBride’s American remake of Jean-Luc Godard’s French arthouse classic is like daubing a cathedral with lively street art. It’s sacrilegious, to be sure, but in a way that is fascinatingly off-kilter and a hell of a lot of fun.

A Pistol for Ringo & The Return of Ringo (1965) Blu Ray (Arrow)

Giuliano Gemma plays two unconnected Ringos in this pair of overlooked spaghetti westerns directed by Duccio Tessari. The first is highly entertaining, the second is one of the finest and most lyrical that the genre has to offer. Both films also star Fernando Sancho, George Martin, Lorella De Luca and others.
